OH THOSE AUTUMN LEAVES AND THE FOOD IT BRINGS

I love autumn! The luscious orange and red trees, the brisk air, fashionable clothes, football games and tailgates, and ohhh the food. As we begin to hunker down for colder weather, we all imagine the yummy foods and hot-spiced drinks of which we can indulge. How comforting is it to cuddle up with a cozy blanket, a good book, or romcom, with a yummy delish bowl of something! And, I have many something’s for you to consider.

One of my go-to bowls of “something” is a good bowl of chili. There’s nothing like it, and you can never go wrong. Other favorite warming soups include, tortilla, black bean, pozole, vegetable, and many more. Chili reminds me of my childhood when we would come home from school, Mommy had a big pot of chili simmering on the stove, and you could smell the aromatic chili pepper spices permeating the house. I knew my tummy would be full and satisfied very soon. Mommy also made her chili every Halloween when she invited the family over for the runway fashion show of cherubs with my nieces and nephews donning their adorable costumes. After feasting on chili and tamales with Mommy and Daddy, we would then go trick or treating. Food conjures up so many wonderful memories.

So, let’s start to prepare for the comforting bowls of something. To do that you need to have your cabinets stocked with fresh bottles of dried spices, cans of beans, tomato sauce, paste and broth. Make sure your spice drawer has fresh herbs and seasonings. If the bottles of spices are too old, your dishes will not be as flavorful. I know it is hard to throw out those bottles if they are half full, but trust me, at least once a year, go through your cabinet and discard old spices. You will thank me later. Get those items now so you don’t have to go out in the dark evening after day light savings kicks in to buy the ingredients. Having staples in your cabinet is key to being a prepared cook.
